March 7, 2016 · South of Sceptre is a massive beach, so beautiful that it doesn't need an ocean. The Great Sandhills is a protected area and home to one of the biggest active sand dunes in Canada. They’re also habitat for over 150 bird species, plenty of native plants and many unique mammals - like the Ord’s kangaroo rat. If you’re up for a bit of exploring, be ready to find sand in places that sand should never be: up your nose, in your ears, in your camera - everywhere. Watch video here
Bird Watching
This area of southwestern Saskatchewan is home to a variety of unique bird species. Mammy's Place is adjacent to the South Saskatchewan River and to the Leader Birding Trail. Burrowing Owls, Golden Eagles, Prairie Falcons, Lark Sparrows, Yellow-breasted Chats and Red-headed Woodpeckers are some of the unique species that breed in the area. We provide guests with a local bird checklist as well as ideas on where to find the species you're looking for.

The Great Sandhills
The Great Sandhills, a fascinating tract of huge, active sand dunes, supports one of the largest populations of Mule Deer and Sharp-tailed Grouse in Saskatchewan. It is also home to such rare and interesting creatures as the Ord's Kangaroo Rat. Enrich your visit to the Great Sandhills by visiting the Great Sandhills Museum, located in nearby Sceptre.
Canoeing
/KayakingMammy's Place is adjacent to "The Forks," the confluence of the Red Deer and South Saskatchewan Rivers. Leisurely canoe trips can be taken from the Highway 41 bridge near Empress down to Mammy's Place at the Estuary Ferry. Mammy's Place can also be a destination point for multi-day trips. If you are interested in bringing your own boat, there is a launch at the Estuary Ferry Crossing, just minutes from Mammy's Place. Contact us for more details.

This area of Alberta and Saskatchewan is home to a number of exclusive artists, artisans, art galleries and shops.
Archeological Sites
Southwestern Saskatchewan was once home to many plains-dwelling First Nations Peoples. Vision quest circles, medicine wheels and stone effigies tell of the important role this area played in their culture. In order to respect both the sites and the current landowners, tours to some of these sacred areas are possible only through prior arrangement with local tour guides.
Mountain Biking/Hiking
There are many areas near Mammy's Place where hikers and bikers can travel across prairie landscapes. In order to respect adjacent landowners, a map of designated hiking/biking areas will be provided to guests upon check-in.
Fishing
The South Saskatchewan River offers excellent fishing opportunities, including Walleye, Pike, Goldeye, Sturgeon and Black Mariahs. Some of the most productive fishing holes are located just a few minutes from Mammy's Place! If you'd rather fish from your boat, a launch is available at the Estuary Ferry Crossing.
Golfing
There are many excellent golf courses within short driving distance. Check the Leader, SK website for more information on Leader's River Ridge Golf Course.
Jet Boat Tours
Experience the thrill of seeing the South Saskatchewan River on a river boat! Start your trip near Bindloss and finish your day at the Estuary Ferry.
Parks
There are several regional parks to explore close to Mammy's Place, including Lemsford Park and Sandy Point Park.
